What does acupuncture feel like?

Acupuncture needles are not like the needles we associate with blood tests and injections. They are finer and are solid. There is usually a slight sensation when the needle is initially inserted: this fades quickly. Many people fall asleep during acupuncture treatments.

How often will I need treatment?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine philosophy, each person is considered unique and so the number of treatments required depends very much on the individual. Sometimes one or two treatments can be remarkably effective and sometimes a full course of treatment will be necessary.

What will happen on my first visit?

The Professor will assess your needs through conversation and an examination. Your general state of health will be assessed. This will give the doctor insight into the specific problem you wish treated. The doctor will feel your pulse on both wrists. He is concerned with their quality, rhythm and strength. This is a very different process from pulse taking in western medicine. Chinese medicine relies heavily on the knowledge gained from this ancient and unique form of diagnoses. The doctor will discuss this very thorough and careful assessment with you before beginning any treatment.

Should my own doctor know?

Yes. You should always inform you regular doctor or specialist if you intend to seek alternative treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Very few side effects have been reported with acupuncture treatments using disposable needles. When the needles are inserted properly by an experienced acupuncturist, there are no risks to underlying nerves or organs. As with any type of treatment, you should always inform the doctor of all medications you are taking as well as any health conditions you may have or have previously experienced. You should also inform your practitioner if you are or could possibly be pregnant. Proper information will help in the selection of the type of treatment that is right for you.

Do I have to believe in acupunture to benefit from it?

Acupuncture seems to work more from the body to the mind as opposed to the other way around. Although one cannot discount a placebo effect, very good results are seen not only with highly dubious people, but also in studies of the effects of acupuncture when used with animals.

What results can I expect from my first visit?

Everyone experiences the effects of acupuncture differently. Some people may start to notice the benefits almost immediately while others need longer before they feel a difference. Some become very relaxed while others may feel euphoric or energized. Those who don’t feel a difference when they leave the clinic may start to notice changes in their symptoms hours to days later.

How soon will I be better?

This is one of the most common questions asked. Your doctor will discuss the time it will take to see positive results from your treatment. A great deal will depend on your general state of health and your willingness to commit to the treatment schedule you agree upon.
